On Saturday 2nd December, CoderDojo is inviting 2048 young people to learn how to Code in Limerick and Maynooth as part of MegaDojo 2017. A MegaDojo is a large scale CoderDojo event that brings together young people from several Dojos as well as those who’ve never attended a Dojo before.
The first MegaDojo was organised by CoderDojo Midwest (Limerick, Nenagh & Ennis) and was attended by 512 young people. They followed that up with a second event in 2016 that was attended by 1024 young people. Now with the support of CoderDojo Ireland and Bank Of Ireland, the 2017 event aims to be bigger and better.
This year’s event takes place in two locations – Limerick Institution of Technology (LIT) and the National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM). Both events will take place simultaneously on the 2nd December and are free to attend.
Throughout the day, we’ll be running Coding Workshops covering topics such as Scratch, Web Development, Java, Python and electronics such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi. We have workshops that are suitable for complete beginners to advanced coders. These will take place in the computer labs of LIT and NUIM so you don’t need to bring a laptop with you.
For young people who already attend a Dojo, we have two competitions. The Scratchathon challenges kids to create a game or animation using the Scratch programming tool. The Hackathon is for young people aged 12+ who use their coding skills to solve a problem. Teams in both competitions have a few hours to complete their project and present it to a team of judges.
We’ll also have several guest speakers on the day taking about topics such as Game Development, Data, Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence. While all that’s going on, there will be a tech showcase featuring tech companies showing off their cool tech and how they use it everyday to hook the next generation.
We need help to make these two events a success
We’re looking for businesses to sponsor the event. We have a number of Sponsorship packs available. Click here to see the sponsorship deck.
We’re also looking for Volunteers on the day – both coders and non coders. We need help with workshops, admin and stewarding. If you would like to help out on the day, please fill out the Volunteer Signup form for your local event:
